Russia sets conditions for supporting Trump's proposed Gaza peace plan
Russian
President Vladimir Putin said in a statement that if US President Trump makes
progress towards a two-state solution, Russia will fully support it. Putin said
that the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel is indispensable
for peace in the region.
The Russian
president said that all parties should agree on a clear timeline for the phased
withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza in order to pave the way for complete
peace.
Putin
explained that Russia has historically supported a two-state solution in light
of the 1948 and 1974 UN resolutions and said that if Trump's plan leads to this
ultimate goal, it can be supported and, in my opinion, everything should be
handed over to President Abbas and the current Palestinian administration.
Putin also
supported the provisions of the Trump plan that call for the release of all
hostages in Gaza and the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli
prisons.
He stressed
that it is important to clarify how many people can be released under what
schedule. He stressed that the views of the Palestinians, countries in the
region and Hamas must be included in any agreement.
