Democratic leader Zahran Mamdani elected NeYork's first Musli
Democratic leader Zahran Mamdani, who has left-wing views, has been elected as the first Muslim mayor of New York, defeating Republican candidate Curtis Silva and former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
According to
the Associated Press, Zahran Mamdani received more votes than Curtis Silva and
independent candidate Andrew Cuomo.
According to
unofficial results, Zahran Mamdani was ahead with 50.3 percent, or 1 million 24
thousand 794 votes, Andrew Cuomo was in second place with 847 thousand 200
(41.6 percent) votes, and Curtis Silva was in third place with 145 thousand 360
(7.1 percent) votes.
According to
the New York Board of Elections, more than 2 million New Yorkers voted, the
largest number of voters in the 50-year history of the mayoral election.
It should be
noted that in the Democratic Party primary race for the New York mayor
candidate held in June, 34-year-old Muslim politician Zahran Mamdani
surprisingly beat former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
After this
victory, Zahran Mamdani was nominated as the Democratic Party's regular
candidate for the New York mayoral election to be held in November.
The election
of democratic socialist politician Zahran Mamdani as mayor is not only a major
blow to President Trump, but also a new history has been made with this success.
Not only is Zahran Mamdani elected the first Muslim mayor of New York, but also
the first South Asian mayor born in Africa.
When he
takes office on January 1, he will also be the youngest mayor of New York in
more than a century.
Zahran
Mamdani was born in Uganda, where he spent his early years, moved to the United
States with his parents at the age of seven and settled in New York. He became
a naturalized citizen in 2018.
An
Indian-American citizen, Zahran Mamdani was a stranger to voters when he
entered the Democratic primary race, promising to reject President Trump's
policies.
He was
elected to the state assembly in the Queens borough of New York and received
the support of two prominent progressive politicians, Senators Bernie Sanders
and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
During the
primary campaign, rival Andrew Cuomo called Zahran Mamdani inexperienced, while
the Muslim politician accused him of harassment.
In 2018,
during Donald Trump's first term, Andrew Cuomo emerged as a critical voice
against the president, prompting former President Bill Clinton and former New
York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to endorse him.
The
differences between the two candidates were clear during the campaign. Andrew
Cuomo is an establishment supporter who served as governor for ten years, while
Mamdani is a progressive and fresh face who has promised to leave the past
behind.
