Is the increasing use of weight loss injections dangerous to health?
Leading
Indian doctors have warned about the rapidly increasing use of ‘weight loss’
injections and their potentially dangerous side effects.
According to
the British newspaper The Guardian, experts say that these injections are not a
magic solution to obesity and diabetes and their unregulated use can prove to
be dangerous to health.
According to
reports, the demand for appetite suppressant injections like ‘Monjaro’,
‘Vegovi’ and ‘Ozumpic’ has increased dramatically in India this year. In just
eight months, ‘Monjaro’ has become India’s best-selling drug, surpassing even
antibiotics.
Following
this success, pharmaceutical company ‘Eli Lilly’ has started research on a
similar new medicine that may be available in tablet form next year.
On the other
hand, pharmaceutical company ‘Novo Nordisk’ has also introduced Ozumpic, but
the prices of these drugs are beyond the reach of the common citizen. Experts
say that the patents of many drugs will expire next year, after which local
companies will introduce cheaper alternatives and the market will be flooded
with these drugs.
According to
doctors, some citizens in India are facing serious problems of obesity and
diabetes. It is estimated that more than 200 million people in the country
suffer from diabetes, while the number of obese patients is increasing rapidly.
Experts believe that the actual number is much higher than the official
figures.
Surgeon Dr
Mohit Bhandari and other experts have warned that the misuse of these injections
can be dangerous. According to them, these drugs can cause muscle weakness,
pancreatitis, gallstones and in some cases vision problems. They have demanded
that the supply and prescription of these drugs be brought under strict
regulations.
Several
experts have also expressed concern that these injections are now being sold at
gyms and beauty clinics without proper medical testing. Doctors say this trend
is dangerous and the government should intervene immediately.
Health
experts agree that weight loss injections can help, but the real solution is a
healthy diet, exercise and lifestyle changes.
They also
say that drugs may be a temporary solution, but for permanent health, lifestyle
changes are essential.
