Okra can protect the brain from the damage of obesity: New research
A new study
has found that okra may be a vegetable that can help prevent long-term health
problems caused by overeating in early life.
According to
NDTV, the study found that a diet rich in okra helped reduce obesity, diabetes
and brain inflammation in mice that were overfed in childhood.
The study
was published in the medical journal Brain Research under the title ‘Okra-rich
diet prevents brain inflammation in obesity-induced obesity’.
The study
was conducted on mice that scientists had taken into their care from a young
age and during their upbringing, they were given a good diet so that they could
grow fatter than normal mice and their bodies could develop better.
When these
mice grew up, they were overweight due to obesity and faced diabetes, blood
pressure and other similar health problems that are usually found in obese
people.
During the
study, mice that were given a diet that included 1.5 percent okra had
significantly fewer of these problems. Their body fat decreased, sugar was
controlled, muscles became stronger and brain inflammation decreased.
Most
importantly, okra restored insulin sensitivity in the part of the brain that
controls hunger and energy use. As a result, such mice ate less food and their
metabolism improved.
The study
also showed that natural components in okra, such as catechins and quercetin,
have the ability to reduce inflammation and improve insulin action.
Interestingly,
okra had no significant effect on mice that were not given much food in
childhood. This means that these benefits are especially for those who are
already at risk of metabolic diseases.
Although
this study was conducted on mice, experts believe that obesity and related
problems can be controlled by including okra in early childhood dietary
strategies. However, more research is needed on humans.
