"Sheikh
Hasina should be sentenced to death 1400 times," the plaintiff's appeal to
the court
Dhaka Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina has been called for the death penalty for her “worst crackdown” on
student-led protests last year.
Sheikh
Hasina, who fled to India after violent student protests last year, is facing a
case of “crimes against humanity” in Bangladesh.
According to
a leaked audio clip, Sheikh Hasina ordered security forces to use “dangerous
weapons” against protesters, but Sheikh Hasina has denied such allegations.
In an audio
leaked online in March, Sheikh Hasina can be heard saying that she is
authorizing security forces to use dangerous weapons against protesters and
ordering them to shoot.
It is worth
noting that according to a UN investigation team, about 1,400 people were
killed during the last protest movement, while Sheikh Hasina and her party, the
Awami League, have denied such allegations.
Chief
Prosecutor Tajul Islam told the court on Thursday that Sheikh Hasina should be
sentenced to 1,400 deaths, but since that is not possible, she should be hanged
once.
He said that
Sheikh Hasina wanted to remain in power for life and was only concerned about
her family.
Sheikh
Hasina’s lawyer maintained that the police were forced to open fire in response
to the violent actions of the protesters.
Along with Sheikh
Hasina, a case is also being filed against Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan
Kamal and former Police Chief Chaudhry Abdullah Al-Mamun in her government.
It is worth
noting that the protest began against the quota given to veterans of the 1971
war in the civil service, which quickly turned into a major movement, which
resulted in the end of Sheikh Hasina’s government, which had been in power in
the country for 15 years.
The most
horrific scenes of the movement were seen on August 5, when Sheikh Hasina fled
the country by helicopter as crowds of protesters were gathering at her
residence in Dhaka.
