preparations
for nuclear test, Russian Foreign Ministry confirms
Moscow:
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has confirmed that President Vladimir
Putin’s order to prepare for a possible nuclear test has been implemented.
According to
the Russian news agency TASS, Sergei Lavrov said that “President Putin’s
instructions are being implemented during the Security Council meeting on
November 5 and the results will be communicated to the public.”
The order
came after US President Donald Trump’s unexpected announcement that the US
would resume nuclear tests.
Lavrov added
that Russia had not received any explanation from the US about Trump’s order.
On the other
hand, relations between Russia and the US have been tense in recent weeks.
Trump canceled a planned summit with Putin over his failure to end the war in
Ukraine and imposed new sanctions on the Russian government, the first since he
returned to power.
US President
Trump announced on October 31 that the United States would resume nuclear
testing after 33 years, but did not specify whether the tests would be
conventional underground nuclear explosions.
Speaking to
reporters on Air Force One before departing for Florida, Trump said: “You’ll
find out very soon, we’re going to do some testing.”
He said he
had ordered the US military to immediately resume testing nuclear weapons,
which is being seen as a strong message to rivals such as China and Russia.
