What did US President Donald Trump say in his last speech of the year?
US President
Donald Trump described his first year in office as a period of success in a
speech on Wednesday evening, even as the American people remain concerned about
the economy and the Republican Party
According to the British news agency Reuters,
the words with which President Trump began his speech on Wednesday evening
encapsulated the central theme of the entire speech: ‘Eleven months ago he took
a bad situation and now he is fixing it.’
In simple
words, his message was that the problems are not his fault.
The US
president, responding to public concerns about inflation and daily expenses,
blamed former President Joe Biden in a speech lasting about 20 minutes and
named him seven times.
Be it the
economy, crime, the health system or poor immigration policy, according to
President Trump, Joe Biden is responsible for all of them.
President
Donald Trump has often blamed Joe Biden for the problems that have arisen since
his return to power, including Russia’s war in Ukraine to offshore wind power
projects.
He took the
same approach on Wednesday, particularly on inflation, which he tried to
dismiss as temporary, much like Biden did when it came to price increases. The
president said how much can change in a year and, dismissing consumer
frustration, claimed that the United States was on the verge of an economic
boom the world had never seen.
US
President Donald Trump said that a year ago the country was dead
The US
president delivered the speech in the White House lobby, instead of in the Oval
Office, where he stood behind a podium and spoke in the same manner he usually
does at his campaign rallies.
President
Trump held the podium tightly and delivered his points at a rapid pace. He
offered no sympathy or comfort for Americans struggling with the rising costs
of food, housing and holiday gifts.
He ended
with a brief Christmas and New Year's greeting.
Although a
White House spokeswoman indicated that the president might mention new policies
in his speech, she did not say much about future plans.
President
Donald Trump said that his administration would implement aggressive housing
policies next year. "We will soon name a new central bank chief, and we
will be sending checks to the military for a certain amount."
Most of the
themes of the US president's speech were the same as those usually heard at his
rallies. He accused Somalis living in Minnesota of taking advantage of the
United States.
He mentioned
the inclusion of men in women's sports and reiterated that the country was dead
a year ago.
The speech
did not focus much on foreign policy, although it has been a major theme in his
second term.
Before the
US president's address, his supporters thought the escalating conflict with
Venezuela might feature prominently.
President
Trump has increased pressure on the Venezuelan leadership in recent weeks and
on Tuesday ordered a ban on oil tankers entering and leaving the country.
It was not
clear whether Trump intended to try to remove the Venezuelan president from
power.
There was no
answer to that question on Wednesday. Instead, he focused mostly on the economy
and briefly boasted about his role in the Middle East and peace.
Trump's
allies have warned his aides in recent weeks to shift their focus from
international conflicts to domestic issues. For at least 18 minutes on Wednesday
night, he appeared to be trying to follow that advice.
