'A heavy burden has been lifted from my chest': Are breast implants that increase breast size dangerous to health?
‘This heavy
burden has been lifted from my chest. One implant weighed 825 grams and now I
feel light like a butterfly.’
Indian
actress Sherlyn Chopra further said in a video on Instagram that ‘I would request
the new generation not to play with their bodies under the influence of social
media.’
Earlier,
Sherlyn had written in her social media post: ‘I am getting my breast implants
removed so that I can live my life without any extra burden.’
Users on
social media are also appreciating her message. But do you know how breast
implants are made and how they are implanted in your body?
What is a
breast implant?
A breast
implant is a cosmetic procedure through which implants are inserted into the
breast to enlarge or improve their size.
Most of the
implants used today are made of silicone. They are like a round ball that is
implanted inside the breast through a procedure.
Dr. Pinky
Pragal, affiliated with Christian Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana,
says that the trend of breast implants has been huge in the last decade due to
social media.
“These
cosmetic procedures are not new but their trend has increased significantly due
to social media. Now all these procedures have become accessible to the common
people, they have become cheaper than before and that is why many people are
now opting for it.”
How much
can breast implants increase breast size?
Indian
actress Sherlyn Chopra claims that one of her breast implants weighed 825
grams, however, experts say that in India, only 250 to 400 mm implants are
recommended.
Dr. Vikas
says: “The plastic surgeon assesses the body structure before breast implants
and based on that, the implants are recommended.” According to him, the size of
the implants is determined by looking at the structure of the shoulders, skin
color, and the height and weight of the patient.
However,
experts say that some people in India are doing such procedures without
permission, which poses risks to the health of citizens.
Dr. Pinky
says, "No doctor decides the size of the implants on the request of a
patient. He first examines the patient and only then the size is advised."
Can
breast implants also pose a risk to health?
Dr. Vikas
says that like other surgeries, the breast implant procedure also carries a
risk of infection.
He told the
BBC that "Many people worry that breast implants can cause cancer in women
or cause problems in breastfeeding their children, but this is not the
case."
"Breast
implants neither increase the risk of cancer nor do they make it difficult for
children to breastfeed."
